Character Education is the Key! The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 sets high standards not only for developing students' academic skills but also for enriching their values. As President Bush said in his speech last year at the White House Conference on Character and Community, “Our children must learn to make a living, but even more, they must learn how to live . . . Schools should be safe and orderly; they should be decent and drug-free; and they should teach character by expecting character..."To learn more about character education in Pennsylvania, attend the Pennsylvania Service-Learning Alliance and the Pennsylvania Alliance for Character Education summer conference in State College, PA! The conference, “Character Education & Service-Learning: A Conference for Teachers and Community Advocates,” will be held July 9-10, 2003 at the Penn Stater Conference Center. The Conference Registration Fee is only $50 and teachers attending the entire conference receive nine Act 48 hours. Reduced hotel rates ($98-$128) at the Penn Stater and the Nittany Lion Inn are available to anyone attending the conference.  This will be an important conference if you want to focus on building positive character development within your students next school year!
