you are a teacher looking for simple ways to engage
your students in both service and global issues within
an educational context, iEARN.org is a great website
to start an online collaborative project or simply
to spark project ideas.
iEARN is a non-profit, international network that allows youth to use the Internet to create and contribute to collaborative educational projects that are intended to enhance learning and make a difference in the world. If you become a member of iEARN, which costs $100/year for teachers or $280/year for an entire school, you can use the site to find ongoing curriculum-based projects and activities. In addition, the site helps facilitate your projects and partnerships. Members will be granted access to the partner database, where you can search globally for partners to join your project. If you are not interested in using the site to help support your service-learning projects, you can also utilize it as a resource for project ideas. If you click on the projects icon, you will see a list of online, curriculum-based service-learning projects that span the globe. There are projects listed for all grade levels and areas of interest. One project called Aspects of Love, facilitated by a teacher in Bulgaria, uses a website to post poetry and other works all dealing with this universal topic. The Bulgarian school has paired with schools in America, Turkey, Germany, Greece, France and Spain, each having students contribute content to the web site. This project idea could be used by either fourth-graders learning poetry or eleventh-graders learning web design. Teachers can look through the lists of projects on iEARN and find ones that they can make work for their classroom. iEARN.org is a great place to get ideas for service-learning projects that can either involve other countries directly or have multi-cultural themes. If you are interested in global service-learning, this site is an excellent resource, not only for ideas, but also, to see what others are doing in this growing field of service-learning |
