Curriculum: Service-Learning and College Prep
When: February 12 through May 14, 2003 on Wednesdays from 4:15 - 6:15 pm Location:University City High School in Philadelphia Are you a teacher in a Philadelphia GEAR UP high school? You can earn $4000 for your school by participating in this course! This course is designed to give GEAR UP teachers an introduction to the Community Problem-Solving Curriculum, a form of service-learning that emphasizes real-world community problem solving. This course will highlight the ways service-learning can help prepare students for post-secondary educational and career opportunities of college. The course is designed for teams of teachers and guidance counselors to work collaboratively to build a model curriculum that they will implement during the school year. Ideally, at least three teachers/guidance counselors will participate from each school. Only teams of teachers will be allowed to participate. Each team will receive the following benefits: · Each team of teachers will receive a $1500 mini-grant to implement the curriculum. · Each school will receive $2500 to build a College and Career Guidance Center. · Each participant will receive 26 Act 48 Hours. · Five participants will get a free trip to the NYLC Conference on Service-Learning, April 23-26, 2003.
