Awards & Scholarships: Nominate Students for Service

by Cynthia Wetmiller

There are many ways that students can be recognized for their service activities, whether through service-learning activities that are connected to the curriculum or volunteer work that is performed after school and on weekends. Here are a few opportunities that are ideal for students who are active in their community:

"President's Student Service Awards"
This award is a White House initiative sponsored by the Corporation for National Service and administered by Youth Service America with the American Institute for Public Service and the Points of Light Foundation. A student must be between 5-25 years old and have performed at least 100 hours of service per year for the Gold Award. The Silver Award goes to 5-14 years old for 50 hours per year. A gold or silver pin with the presidential seal plus a certificate and letter from the president is awarded to each student nominated. "YouthActionNet"
YouthActionNet is now giving awards to youth leaders and their emerging projects that promote social change and connect youth with local communities. These youth-led projects should have clearly defined goals and have potential for growth or further replication. Final selections are made following a peer review process in which previous award winners select the next round of awardees. Award recipients will receive $500, which includes funds for a disposable camera to photo-document their project for an online photo gallery. Award recipients will also have the opportunity to take part in an online journal and contribute to a booklet of case studies highlighting the work of young people bringing positive change to their communities around the world. First selection deadline: April 18, 2003. http://www.youthactionnet.org/minigrants.php
