[printer friendly (text) page] Character Education Highlight of Summer 2002! by Jessica Friedrichs Summer Rainbow Adventure Camp
Beaver County Community Prevention Project July 29 – August 2, 2002 The Summer Rainbow Adventure Camp supplied an opportunity for character building among five through eight year old Headstart students in Beaver County. Students learned lessons in building character while creating art projects, enjoying nature, singing songs and eating nutritious meals and snacks. Some of the many visitors throughout the week included a local policeman and a lesson in bike safety from community member, Blanche Louser. Susan Mansuetti of Adult Literacy Action presented a wildlife lesson and read The Salamander Room by Anne Mazer. Shana Gallagher, Dairy Princess of Beaver County and Roseanne Lederer of Schneider’s Dairy taught about good nutrition by creating a milk punch with sherbert and telling stories with a puppet named Miss Udderly. Within just one week, “the kids really came a long way”, said Jennifer Engle, a camp counselor. In a remarkable and promising moment, as kids sang the peacemaker song about talking through conflict rather than fighting, two children spontaneously locked hands, not to fight but to shake and be friends. Thanks and congratulations to Barbara Knopp for all her hard work and her many successes with the Summer Rainbow Adventure! |
