Call for Articles

The PSLA would like to invite you to submit articles to be published in the monthly newsletters. Articles should relate to service-learning and the theme of the specific newsletter, should highlight current issues in education or service-learning events, and should be between 500 and 1500 words. Please email submissions as a Word attachment by 3pm the day of the deadline to maryzim@pitt.edu. Articles submitted after this deadline are not guaranteed to be reviewed. After your article has been reviewed, you will be contacted by the editor with further comments and suggestions. The PSLA looks forward to your contributions! If you have any questions, please email Mary at the above address.

Service-Learning Update

November
Veteran’s Day: Celebrate it with Service-Learning This issue will highlight projects in which students interact with local veterans or build awareness about veterans’ issues.
Submission deadline: October 25

December
Homeless for the Holidays: Tips and Ideas for Helping the Homeless
Projects that involve students helping the homeless and homeless shelters during the holiday season will be featured.
Submission deadline: November 22

Keeping in PACE

November
Thankfulness Our Thanksgiving issue will highlight service-learning projects that encourage a sense of thankfulness in the community.
Submission deadline: November 1

December
Holidays Around the World: Tips and Ideas for A Diverse Holiday Season
There are many unique holidays celebrated during the month of December. This bulletin will highlight the diversity of the December holiday season and encourage students and teachers to explore holiday projects that promote the diversity of their community.
Submission deadline: November 26

Wired for Service

November
Computer Recycling: Yesterday’s Trash could be Tomorrow’s Treasure!
This issue will highlight service-learning projects that focus on the environmental aspects of computer recycling. Project ideas are needed, as are articles about the environmental concerns related to the disposal of computers and computer parts.
Submission deadline: November 8

December
Shareware and Freeware
The expense of software keeps many people and organizations from keeping up with technology. This issue will highlight software that is considered to be “shareware” and “freeware.” Tips and ideas for downloading and installing freeware and shareware are needed, as are reviews of shareware and freeware software that could be useful for teachers and students.

Special Ed Update

November
Service-Learning: The Perfect Way to Transition
This issue will highlight tips and ideas for promoting transition goals and objectives via service-learning. Articles about the issues that surround transition and how service-learning can help are needed.
Submission deadline: November 15

December
Life Skills: Holiday Craft Projects that Make a Difference
Many Life Skills teachers use crafts in the classroom as a method to help students develop fine motor skills and foster creativity. This issue will highlight specific craft projects that have been successful in Life Skills classrooms and how these craft projects can meet community needs, especially around the holidays.
Submission deadline: December 6

Earth Day is Every Day

December
Trash to Treasure: Recycled Gifts that Make a Difference
This issue focuses on environmentally conscious gift-giving. Articles should discuss projects in which students make holidays gifts from recycled materials for the homeless, hospital patients, or other people in need.
Submission deadline: November 26
