Scholarship and professional development opportunities in the field of peace and justice

The United States Institute of Peace is hosting a National Peace Essay Contest for high school students.  The Institute is looking for essays that examine the justification of war.  State winners will win a $1,000 scholarship for their college education and will be eligible to compete in the national competition, in which first place wins $10,000, second place $5,000 and third place $2,000 in college scholarships.  Check out http://www.usip.org/ed/npec/index.shtml for the specific topic question, rules and eligibility guidelines.  The deadline for essay submissions is January 22, 2003.

Teaching Tolerance of tolerance.org has prepared a list of low-cost summer study abroad opportunities for K through 12 teachers who would like to work on professional development in the areas of tolerance and equity.  Check out the site for programs that “range from multifaceted federal initiatives to explorations of particular cultures or issues.”  Deadlines are varied, but applications should be submitted as soon as possible in order to guarantee a place in the course.  http://www.tolerance.org/teach/current/event.jsp?cid=386
