Website Review: The Guidance Channel

by Monica Hochstedler

For educators interested in finding resources and reading articles on a multiplicity of topics related to character development and education, http://www.guidancechannel.com/ is an excellent website to visit.  “The Guidance Channel® is an educational publishing and media company whose mission is to provide children, students, parents, adults and professionals with timely and effective tools that help them or their clients make critical life choices” (http://www.guidancechannel.com/).

Hundreds of articles written by experts in various education and psychology fields or by people with practical life experiences can be accessed at this site.  Current relevant articles are under fifteen different topics found on the left-hand side of the window.  These categories, sponsored by an outside but related organization, include the following:

·        At-Risk Youth
·        Diversity and Tolerance
·        Dropout Prevention
·        Life Skills
·        Mentoring
·        Parent Education
·        Professional Development
·        Remedial Education
·        Service Learning and Community Service
·        Special Education
·        Substance Abuse and Prevention
·        Therapy and Counseling
·        Violence Prevention
·        Wellness
·        Youth Entrepreneurship

Clicking on the "Spotlight Articles" menu accesses additional articles.  One article, "Stressors in the Lives of Immigrant Children", written by Cristina Casanova, explores the possible emotional needs of immigrant children along with the sociological implications of cultural change.  To accompany this practically oriented article, an interview with Dr. Garcia Cole from the Center for Human Development at Brown University “reviews common barriers to immigrant parents that prevent them from becoming involved in their children's education and suggests steps schools can take to break down these barriers”.  Dr. Cole’s interview can be found by clicking on "Spotlight Interviews".

Resources related to technology, funding for programs and current policies affecting education and youth-related issues are also available on The Guidance Channel’s home page.

Educators are important mentors in the lives of youth.  The Guidance Channel offers many practical and insightful suggestions for teachers and administrators who help students face the challenges of life choices.
