[printer friendly (text) page] National Nonprofit for Disabled Students by Mary Zimmerle Ambitious
and talented students with disabilities may at times
have difficulty finding challenging programs that
are accessible and inclusive. Finding such
programs that also include international travel can
be even more difficult. Mobility International
USA (MIUSA) is a national nonprofit organization
that works to change this trend, providing opportunities
to disabled students and adults. “The
mission of Mobility International USA (MIUSA) is
to empower people with disabilities around the world
through international exchange, information, technical
assistance and training, and to ensure the inclusion
of people with disabilities in international exchange
and development programs.” (http://www.miusa.org/).
MIUSA in part runs the National Clearinghouse on Disability and Exchange which aims to educate people with disabilities about the opportunities available to them involving international service and jobs, as well as educate universities and other institutions about options for greater inclusion in their programs. By providing publications, online resources and advocacy possibilities, MIUSA is able to literally open up the world to people who are disabled. Students can use this resource to cultivate contacts with international institutions and individuals. Because MIUSA carries out programs for youth and adults, as well as leadership training for those ready to take the next step in the program, this organization may be the logical next step for those students who are ready to see and serve the world. Check out MIUSA's program details at http://www.miusa.org/.
