Keeping in PACE with you!

by Cynthia Wetmiller

While many teachers are aware of the existence of the Pennsylvania Alliance for Character Education (PACE) and the Pennsylvania Service-Learning Alliance (PSLA), they may be unaware of the ways staff members can assist K-12 teachers statewide with service-learning and character education.

Here is a brief look at how PACE and PSLA staff can assist you with your character education and service-learning initiatives:

1. Monthly service-learning and character education workshops. Workshops are held on a regular basis in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, and we're working on scheduling workshops in more rural areas of the state so that teachers do not have to drive into the city to benefit from our workshops. If you can't come to us, we'll come to you! Can't make any of our scheduled events? Give us a call and arrange for the PSLA or PACE staff to facilitate a workshop at your school or community agency. There is no charge to have us come to you!

2. Weekly email bulletins that highlight state intiatives in the areas of service-learning and character education, as well as tips and ideas for promoting service-learning in a variety of classroom and community settings.

3. A web portal for teachers to browse online resources, learn more about character education programs in Pennsylvania, discover character education websites and register for events.

4. Character Education, Service-Learning and Special Education Peer Consultants are available to assist teachers via phone or in person on an as-needed basis. If the PACE or PSLA staff can't answer your questions or assist you with your project, one of our Peer Consultants surely will. With close to 20 peer consultants in action statewide, we can put you in touch with someone who can address your needs and concerns about service-learning or character education.

5. Phone consultations or person-to-person meetings can be arranged by calling the PSLA/PACE staff nearest you. Getting out of the classroom can be difficult, especially with a substitute shortage being common in most school districts. If you'd like to sit down with a PACE or PSLA staff member and discuss your character education and/or service-learning program or ideas, just give us a call and we'll do whatever we can to help you!
