[printer friendly (text) page] Yule Be Glad You Recycled This Holiday Season by Joe Greene Everyone enjoys getting gifts during the holidays. Our wish lists usually include new, updated items to replace old, worn or broken items. On December 26, all the old items are moved out the door to make room for everything new. Well, here is a wonderful way to extend the life of those items and keep the joy of the holidays alive for others. RECYCLE! Many household items are recyclable. In addition to glass, plastic and paper, items that normally end up either in the basement or the trash have practical recycling values. Did you know your old running shoes can become a playground? The Nike Company has a program called “Reuse-a-Shoe”. Athletic shoes of all brands are converted into athletic surfaces for playgrounds. Talk about “going the extra mile!” Rather than store your old computer in the basement, donate it while it is still useful. Many organizations, such as The National Cristina Foundation, can find a good home for your old computer. They provide access to computer technology and training for people in need of these skills. What else around your home can be recycled? How about cell phones, floppy disks, batteries, eyeglasses and old clothes, etc. Visit these links for more information on how and where to recycle household items: www.obviously.com/recycle/guides/hard.html www.nikebiz.com/environ/reuse.html http://www.dressforsuccess.org/ http://www.cristina.org/ http://www.goodwill.org/ http://www.ouac.com/ Happy holidays and happy recycling! |
