Verizon 2007 YouthTech Essay Contest (Deadline: Feb. 19)
The United Way of Southeastern PA is proud to announce the launch of the Verizon 2007 YouthTech Essay Contest! The Verizon Foundation has partnered with United Way for the third consecutive year to honor young people with active involvement in using technology to transform their communities.

The goal of the Verizon YouthTech Contest is to challenge prospective high school students to create a realistic technology project. High school students from the Philadelphia School District are invited to prepare an essay in accordance with the program’s criteria, in one of the following categories of Web Design, Community Service, and Youth Technology Development.

1st Place Prize: Wireless laptop with router and multi-purpose printer
2nd Place Prizes: Wireless laptops with printer
3rd Place Prizes: Desktop computers and printers

The Verizon YouthTech Contest will be accepting entries from January 9th - February 19th and winners will be notified on March 30, 2007. Contestants will be ranked in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place and prizes will be awarded in May 2007. Essays can be submitted online at www.uwsepa.org/techcontest until February 19th . Prudential Spirit of Community Awards

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program is seeking young people who have distinguished themselves through their community service activities.
 
The program recognizes students in grades 5–12 who have demonstrated exemplary community service.  Over the past 12 years, the program has honored more than 70,000 young volunteers at the local, state and national levels.  Each year more than 1000 applicants receive recognition at the state level!
 
Schools and officially designated organizations may select one middle level and one high school Local Honoree for every 1,000 students (or portion thereof). Local Honorees are judged at the state level and 102 State Honorees from the 50 United States and the District of Columbia, will be named in February 2007. Each State Honoree will receive $1,000 and an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, DC, (May 5–8, 2007) with one parent or guardian. While in Washington DC, 10 National Honorees will be chosen. Each of the 10 National Honorees receives an additional $5,000, a gold medallion, and a crystal trophy for his or her school.
