As many of you are aware, we are at a critical juncture in the federal appropriations process for Learn and Serve America. Recently, both the House and Senate Appropriations Committees reported out a $34.1 million funding level (a 20% cut from the traditional level of $43m) in their respective LHHS bills for Learn and Serve America. However, there are still many steps left in the appropriations process before final funding levels are enacted.

Senator Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania plays a very important role in the decision-making process. Service-learning advocates in Pennsylvania have a unique opportunity to help make a difference for the entire service-learning community.

During this time, we want to mobilize our service-learning supporters and coordinate our advocacy efforts. We urge you to join us and other advocates in your state on a conference call THIS FRIDAY, August 18th to discuss the following:

  • Legislative update
  • Current advocacy efforts
  • Specific next steps for service-learning advocates in Pennsylvania

We hope that this conference call will help initiate further discussions and allow the supporters in your state to coordinate other collective advocacy efforts.

Date: Friday, August 18, 2006 @ 3:00 PM Eastern Daylight Time

We need to ensure we have enough phone lines reserved. RSVP as soon as possible to rwilson@ysa.org. We look forward to having you on the call.
