American Academy of Dermatology Announces 2008 Shade Structure Grant Program (March 5, 2008)
To assist organizations in creating sun-safe outdoor areas, the
American Academy of Dermatology has announced the availability of grant applications for its Shade Structure Program. The program is open to United States nonprofit organizations or educational institutions for permanent shade structures over outdoor locations which are not protected from the sun, such as playgrounds, pools, eating areas, and other locations. The 2008 program will have a longer grant cycle in order to allow AAD members to work with local schools and organizations to develop sun-safety programs and initiatives, one of the criteria for application. Also please note, the 2008 program is only open to schools and organizations that serve children and teenagers, ages 18 and younger. National Gardening Association's Healthy Sprouts Awards to Support School and Youth Garden Programs (Oct 15 2007)
As a way to encourage the growth of health-focused youth gardens, the National Gardening Association recognizes outstanding programs via the Healthy Sprouts Awards, sponsored by Gardener's Supply. The awards support school and youth garden programs that teach about nutrition and the issue of
hunger in the United States. To be eligible for the 2007 Healthy Sprouts Awards, a school or organization must plan to garden in 2008 with at least fifteen children between the ages of 3 and 18. The selection of winners is based on the demonstrated relationship between the garden program and nutrition and hunger issues in the U.S. This year, NGA will present Healthy Sprouts Awards to twenty schools or organizations. Each program will receive gift certificates toward the purchase of gardening materials from Gardener's Supply, with the top five each receiving a certificate valued at $500, and fifteen more receiving gift certificates valued at $200. Awardees will also receive educational materials related to gardening and nutrition, twenty-five packets of seeds,

Captain Planet Environmental Grant (June 30, Sept 30, Dec 31)

Foster's in the Community announces funds to supports projects in three core focus areas: wellness, culture and the environment. Community Action for a Renewed Environment (Apr 9)
The Environmental Protection Agency announces the CARE (Community Action for a Renewed Environment) Grant Program. The CARE grant program will help communities form collaborative partnerships, develop a comprehensive understanding of the many sources of risk from toxics and environmental pollutants, set priorities, and identify and carry out projects to reduce risks through collaborative action at the local level. Reducing Public Exposure to Indoor Pollutants (Mar 2)
The Environmental Protection Agency has announced funds to support demonstration, training, outreach and/or education projects that yield measurable environmental outcomes in reducing exposure to indoor air pollutants. The deadline for applications is March 2, 2007. Approximately $600,000 is available to fund 6 awards, ranging from $25,000 to $50,000.

Red, White, and Green Climate Change Grant (Mar 9)
Youth Service America and the Civil Society Institute are excited to announce the second round of the Red, White & Green Climate Change Grant. This opportunity offers $500 to young people in the United States between the ages of 15-25 and to organizations that engage youth ages 15-25. Applicants are expected to develop and implement a service-learning project about climate change that engages their community, policy-makers and candidates running for election in 2007 and 2008. We welcome projects where youth work in partnership with adults (parents, coaches, teachers, youth leaders, etc.): but the projects should be youth-led, and must take place between May 1 and October 31, 2007. Selected grantees will share the outcomes and next steps of their service projects with each other and with climate change experts. Grants for STEM Instruction (Jan 31)
The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Foundation is offering grants for educators to present science, math and technology to students via hands-on activities with the goal of developing a future generation of aeronautics and aerospace engineers, scientists, pilots and space explorers.  Grants of $200 are administered to programs on a rolling basis with a total of up to $1,000 per program per year.  Grants submitted for consideration for the upcoming quarter should be received by January 31.  For further information, go to http://www.aiaa.org/content.cfm?pageid=216.

Global Climate Challenge (Oct 15)
Can High Schoolers Solve Climate Change Problems?
"Over the next year, top high school students across Vermont and the US will be partnering with peers in Korea, China and India to find real-world engineering solutions to help in the fight against climate change. Working together through on-line challenges, teams will develop a business plan for a practical product. Winners will receive college scholarships and other awards. 2007 Environmental Education Grants Program
(Dec 15)
The program is designed to help schools, universities, nonprofit organizations and county conservation districts develop projects to educate students and professionals on ways they can help preserve and protect our environment. Grant amounts vary from $2,000 for mini-grants to $15,000 and $20,000 in seven areas designed to cover specific topics that include sustainable energy sources, air quality issues, watersheds and wetlands. Schools may apply for money to integrate the Academic Standards for Environment and Ecology or Science and Technology into formal curriculum, or to provide lessons and field experiences that include standards based instruction.
Pre-application letters must be postmarked by Dec. 15th.

The Yves Rocher Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the Yves Rocher beauty company, is accepting applications for the Terre de Femmes "Women of the Earth" Awards from the United States. The awards are designed to honor women who make the world a greener place through their actions and programs. The first-place prize winner will be entered in the International Women of the Earth Awards with other first-prize winners from other countries. She will be taken to Paris, France, to attend the award ceremony on March 8, 2007, and could win the international prize.

School gardens that use organic methods are eligible to enter the Organic School Garden Awards program, sponsored by the Rodale Institute. Teams of students and teachers (grades K-12) nationwide are asked to submit an essay and poster that express how they use their school garden as a learning tool, how they use the produce they grow, and what impact it has for the students and community. Any school within the fifty United States with an organic garden may enter the contest. Three winning schools will receive cash prizes of $250, $500, and $1,000. The National Gardening Association and Home Depot have announced the 24th annual Youth Garden Grant Program. Applicants must plan to garden in 2007 with at least fifteen children between the ages of three and 18 years. Applicants should demonstrate a child-centered plan that emphasizes children/youth learning and working in an outdoor garden. Areas considered for support include educational, environmental, or social programming; leadership; community support; sustainability; innovation, and need. The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, in cooperation with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service National Wildlife Refuge System and other program partners, invites applications from organizations interested in initiating the Nature of Learning Program in their communities. The Nature of Learning, a community-based environmental education initiative, seeks to use National Wildlife Refuges as outdoor classrooms to promote a greater understanding of local conservation issues; encourage an interdisciplinary approach to learning that seeks to enhance student academic achievement; utilize field experiences and student-led stewardship projects to connect classroom lessons to real-world issues; and involve a partnership among local schools, community groups, natural resource professionals, and local businesses.

National Forest Foundation Community Assistance Program

The National Forest Foundation established the Community Assistance Program to promote the creation of locally based forest partnerships that seek to build ecological, social, and economic sustainability. The program will support newly formed nonprofit organizations in need of start-up capacity-building and which intend to proactively and inclusively engage the local community in forest management and conservation issues on and around national forests and grasslands. The NFF CAP provides start-up grants in the $5,000-$15,000 range, as well as basic tools and guidance, to enable newly forming grassroots community groups to resolve differences and play a more active role in the sustainable management of nearby National Forests and surrounding communities.

Hutton Junior Fisheries Biology Program (Feb 15)
The Hutton Junior Fisheries Biology Program is designed to stimulate interest in careers in fisheries science and management among groups underrepresented in the fisheries professions, including minorities and women. Students (Grades 10-12) spend 8 weeks in the summer working alongside their mentor who is a fisheries professional in their local community. Maximum Award: Participants receive a $3,000 scholarship paid out in 6 installments over the summer months. Eligibility: all sophomore, junior, and senior high school students regardless of race, creed, or gender. Because the principal goal of the program is to increase diversity within the fisheries professions, preference will be given to qualified women and minority applicants. National 4-H Council: Youth in Action/Community Tree Planting Grants. The National 4-H Council offers grants in the amount of $500 to $1,750 to 4 H/Extension groups in local communities, in counties, and at the state level. This program is for young people and adults involved in ongoing community tree planting and/or reforestation projects or to stimulate new and creative youth-led projects. Community Garden Groups Invited to Apply for Fiskars Orange Thumb Grant Program (Feb 17)
Fiskars Garden & Outdoor Living (http://www.fiskars.com/US/) is now accepting applications for its 2006 Project Orange Thumb grants program. The company created Project Orange Thumb to support community garden groups in the U.S. with tools and materials.Project Orange Thumb recipients will receive grants of up to $1,500 in Fiskars Garden Tools (retail value), and up to $800 in gardening-related materials such as plants, seeds, mulch, etc. Recipients will also receive Project Orange Thumb t-shirts for garden members/volunteers.The program is open to any community garden in the fifty states and the District of Columbia. International Young Eco-Hero Award (Feb 28)
Action For Nature seeks applications from 8 to 16 year olds worldwide for its 2006 International Young Eco-Hero Awards Program. Volvo Adventure Youth Environmental Award (Jan 31)
The Volvo Adventure International competition (http://www.volvoadventure.org/) is an environmental award that rewards environmental action taken by young people. The program is intended to give young people the chance to gain international recognition for their local environmental projects and to help support environmental education in schools and the local community. Volvo
Adventure is supported by the United Nations Environment Program (http://www.unep.org/). Groups must be made up of between two and five young

K-12 Math and Science Education Grants (rolling deadline)
The Toyota USA Foundation is committed to improving the quality of K-12 education by supporting innovative programs that improve the teaching and learning of mathematics and science. Support for K-12 Environmental Projects

EPA Environmental Education Grants Program
This effort supports environmental education projects that promote environmental stewardship and help develop aware and responsible students, teachers, and citizens. This grant program provides financial support for projects which design, demonstrate, or disseminate environmental education practices, methods, or techniques as described in this notice. Maximum Award: $79,000. Eligibility: Any local education agency, college or university, state education or environmental agency, not-for-profit organization as described in Section 501(C)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, or noncommercial educational broadcasting entity may submit a proposal. A teacher's school district, an educator's nonprofit organization, or a faculty member's college or university may apply, but an individual teacher or faculty member may not apply.  These organizations will award \ Grants to schools and community organizations with child-centered, outdoor garden programs. Priority will be given to programs that emphasize one or more of these elements: educational focus and/or curricular ties (if applicant is a formal education program); nutrition or plant-to-food connections; environmental awareness/education; entrepreneurship; and social aspects of gardening such as leadership development, team building, community support, or service-learning. 150 programs will receive Home Depot gift cards for the purchase of gardening materials and supplies particular to the needs of their program, and an activity package from NGA. Fifty first-place winners will receive $500 gift cards; 100 second-place winners will receive $250 gift cards. Schools, youth groups, community centers, camps, clubs, treatment facilities, and intergenerational groups are eligible to apply. Applicants must plan to garden in 2006 with at least fifteen children between the ages of three and 18 years. Outdoor Classroom Grant Program (Dec. 31)

The Lowe's Charitable and Educational Foundation, International
Paper, and the National Geographic Explorer! classroom magazine
have partnered to offer grants for schools to improve their
science curriculum by building an outdoor classroom or improving

The Radical Renovation
School Edition program educates students about sustainability and challenges classrooms to submit plans to make their campus more environmentally responsible. Schools can win $100,000 for eco-renovations. Ford Motor Company is partnering with the National Park Foundation and National Geographic on this exciting environmental education effort. Brower Youth Awards for Environmentalists:
Applications are now being accepted for the 2005 Brower Youth Awards.
Environmentalists between 13 and 22 years of age are eligible to apply.
"People my age should count on checking out reasonably soon, but our young people are going to have to live on this planet quite a bit longer, so we're depending on them to shape us up before it's too late," says David R. Brower.
A cash prize of $3,000 is not a scholarship, but a reward for past work and present leadership.

School and Community Organizations Invited to Apply for Garden Teaching Grants
Deadline: March 31, 2005
Through the Healthy Sprouts Award program, the National Gardening Association (http://www.garden.org/home) and Gardener's Supply Company (http://www.gardeners.com/) have partnered to support schools and community organizations that use gardens to teach about nutrition and explore the issue of hunger in the United States. Each of twenty-five selected programs will receive an award package of seeds, tools, garden products, and educational resources for growing a vegetable garden. Five of these programs will also receive $500 in cash and a $200 gift certificate to the Gardener's Supply Company catalog. The selection of winners is based on the demonstrated relationship between the garden and nutrition education and hunger awareness. At least 10 percent of the food produced from the program should be donated.

Conservation Fund Announces 2005 Kodak American Greenways Grants Program

The Kodak American Greenways Awards Program, a partnership project of the Eastman Kodak Company, the Conservation Fund (http://www.conservationfund.org/),
and the National Geographic Society (http://www.nationalgeographic.com/), provides small grants to stimulate the planning and design of greenways in communities throughout America. Grants may be used for activities such as mapping, ecological assessments, surveying, conferences, and design activities; developing brochures, interpretative displays, audio-visual productions, or public opinion surveys; hiring consultants, incorporating land trusts, building a foot bridge, planning a bike path, or other creative projects. In general, grants can be used for all appropriate expenses needed to complete a greenway project, including planning, technical assistance, legal, and other costs. Awards will primarily go to local, regional, or statewide nonprofit organizations. Although public agencies may also apply, community organizations will receive preference.

Five-Star Restoration Matching Grants Program
Deadline: March 1, 2005
The program, which is open to any public or private entity, provides modest financial assistance on a competitive basis to support community-based wetland, riparian, and coastal habitat restoration projects that build diverse partnerships and foster local natural resource stewardship through education, outreach, and training activities. Projects must therefore involve diverse partnerships of ideally five organizations that contribute funding, land, technical assistance, workforce support, and/or other in-kind services. Award amounts range between $5,000 and $20,000, with the average grant amount roughly $10,000.

National Gardening Association Grants Program
The NGA supports programs across the country that actively engage kids in the garden and improve the quality of life for all. The Youth Garden Grants provide schools and community organizations with seeds, tools, garden products, and educational resources for child-centered outdoor garden programs. The Room to Grow Juliana Greenhouse Grants support schools and community organizations for projects that engage youngsters in a greenhouse environment. Applications for Youth Garden Grants are due December 1, 2004; applications for Room to Grow Grants are due December 31, 2004.

Environmental Grants for Water Projects

Altria Group, Inc. ( http://altria.com/) has announced its 2004 environment request for proposals. The goal of this initiative is to support innovative programs and projects that encourage collaboration among stakeholders to address water impairment and water use issues, and their impact on watersheds and constituent water bodies. Altria Group will award up to 20 grants ranging from $10,000 to $75,000 per project. Grants may be used to cover costs associated with project development and implementation, including printing, materials, travel expenses, office supplies, planning costs, and key staff salaries.

National Gardening Association Grant and Awards Programs
National Gardening Association supports programs across the country that actively engage kids in the garden and improve the quality of life for all. Except for the Mantis Award, to be eligible for the following grants and awards programs, your school or organization must plan to garden with at least 15 kids between the ages of 3 and 18. You may apply for more than one award.

Environmental Protection Agency Grants and Fellowships
The Grant Program sponsored by EPA's Office of Environmental Education supports environmental education projects that enhance the public's awareness, knowledge, and skills to help people make informed decisions that affect environmental quality. EPA awards grants each year based on funding appropriated by Congress. Annual funding for the program ranges between $2 and $3 million. More than 75 percent of the grants awarded by this program receive less than $15,000. The deadline for applying for a fiscal year 2005 environmental education grant is November 15, 2004.

Budweiser Conservation Scholarship Program Seeks Applications

This highly competitive scholarship program supports and promotes innovative research or study that seeks to respond to today's most pressing conservation issues. EPA Brownfields Grant
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is accepting proposals for up to 200 brownfields assessment, revolving loan fund, and cleanup grants, contingent on availability of funds in the agency's FY05 budget. The grants may be used to address sites contaminated by petroleum and hazardous substances.
