REACH Grant Proposal

A. Vision Statement

The students in my eighth grade Technology Education class have chosen to work with Habitat for Humanity, constructing two houses as a community service project. We will begin work on the interior of the house and be involved in the entire project for the second house. We will be released from school on our scheduled "club day" at 1 p.m. each Friday to work on the houses.

B. Project Design

-There are many families in Bellefonte who need decent, affordable housing. After reading an article in the local newspaper describing the Habitat project in Bellefonte, my students wanted to contribute their time and labor for a cause that will affect several of their classmates.

· As a part of the community service component of my course, students will assist in the construction of two houses. When we are finished with this project there will be two new homes for families who could not afford to build a house in the conventional manner.

· The students will contact Habitat for Humanity and schedule times to work on the houses. We will provide class and club time for the project and arrange to work after school as well. Students will be responsible for all phases of this project from arranging contact with the HFH to scheduling work times and providing labor.

· Through this project, students will develop a partnership with Habitat for Humanity, local construction firms and the other community volunteers.

C. School To Work

· Students will research a variety of construction careers that they see on the project. They will make valuable contacts in the construction community as a result of working on the project.

D. Academic Connection

· Students will use skills learned in Technology Education classes to complete a variety of construction tasks in the construction of two houses.

· As a result of this project, we will anticipate the following academic outcomes:

1. An understanding of how a house is designed using CAD
2. The development of basic house framing skills
3. The development of blueprint reading skills
4. An awareness of construction careers that are available in the Bellefonte Area

· Reflection will be incorporated each week as we discuss the project and our progress. Students will be asked to keep a journal in which they will write about their experiences encountered as we build together.

· The academic outcomes match our curriculum very well. All tech Ed students are expected to develop an understanding of CAD and the basic design principles involved in the construction of a house.

· Scans foundation skills incorporated into the project are as follows:

1. Skill #2, problem solving and decision making will play a large role in the project as students identify the problems of housing shortages in their community, plan solutions by arranging a work schedule and assigning jobs.
2. Skills #3 and #4, self-management and responsibility, will be necessary as students learn how to work as a team to accomplish such a large goal.
3. Skills #5, #6, #9, and #10, math speaking and writing, reading and listening and reasoning will be used in reading blueprints, solving problems and communicating necessary information to complete the project.
4. Skills #7, #8, and #11, social skills, integrity and self-esteem will all be addressed while working with volunteers in the community to provide housing for people in need.

E. Youth Voice

· Students will play a significant role throughout this project, as they are responsible for planning, contacting Habitat for Humanity, scheduling jobs and providing labor.
