REACH Grant Proposal

Vision:

We the students of the Interactive Physical Science class have conducted an assessment of our community, and we have decided that there is a need for an increase in energy awareness. With the changes in the delivery of electricity, the community needs to become more aware of alternative fuels and how their choice will impact the community's environment. We feel that by building a solar car, conducting demonstrations and doing presentations on alternative fuels, we can increase awareness and assist community members in making informed choices.

Project Design: - as submitted.

As stated in the vision, the students saw a need to educate the community about alternative energy. After that need was determined they brainstormed ideas of how they would implement their plan. After approval, the students will contact key government agencies such as the Department of Energy, the Department of Environmental Protection, and local utilities and collect the information that is already available. After, the students will determine what other materials will be necessary. Students will then develop brochures, display boards and public relations materials to obtain support of the project. At the same time they will be designing and developing their own solar car. Upon completion of the displays, educational lessons and the car, the students will tour the districts grade schools and take part in activities in the community. During these events they will be educating both the younger students and the community members on alternative fuels so they can help their families make informed choices.

School to Work

During the project the students will take part in individual, group, and class activities, this will provide them with the opportunity to explore different work environments. The students will have the opportunity to develop their communication skills, math/budgeting skills, social skills and decision-making skills. This project mimics an actual scientific production facility with students in different areas developing different parts of a whole project, students will be given the opportunity to see how other curriculum areas are connected to science and how school is actually connected to work.

Academic Connection

This project incorporates all of the SCAN skills and many of the topics covered in the physical science curriculum. It provides a connecting activity while reinforcing concepts developed in the classroom. This project also provides an outlet for the students to develop presentation skills and social skills, which may help develop self-esteem and bring less assertive students into leadership roles.

Youth Voice

The students have already had an active role in determining the project and what tasks to do to support the project. Students will be responsible for monitoring each other and completing reflection activities during the project. These activities will also help determine the student's perception on who is implementing the project.
