Science Service-Learning Project Ideas
Lead-poisoning
High School chemistry students can start a lead-poisoning
campaign in their community and learn about the dangers, the causes, and
the remedies for lowering the risk of lead-poisoning in their community.
Pollution and litter
Middle School, Elementary and High School students can rid a local river
or stream of trash and debris while learning about the plant-life and fish/animal
habitats that
are endangered by pollution and litter.
Chemical contamination
High School and Middle School students can study chemical contamination and
water pollution as they test the local streams and rivers in their community.
Germs
High School or Middle School students can produce an assembly for preschool
or elementary students on hand-washing and germs.
Earth Day
Students in all grades can plan and implement an Earth
Day project in their community.
Community garden
Students in all grades can start a community
garden, learning about botany and nutrition while providing
fruits and vegetables for a local food bank or shelter.
Household chemicals
Middle School or High School students can teach elementary students about
household chemicals that are poisonous, working in cooperation with the
local EMS, hospital, fire department, or a group of pediatricians.
Grow bulbs or roots
Elementary students can learn about botany and plant life cycles
as they grow bulbs or roots into flowers or plants. The flowers or plants
can be given to people residing in a local homeless shelter, nursing home
or hospital.
Soap Drive
High School chemistry students can host a Soap Drive to
collect soap/cleaning products for the local food bank. Students can learn
about the chemical processes involved in making soap-perhaps even make soap
as a lab experiment-as they provide much needed products to the food bank
clientele.
