Art Service-Learning Project Ideas
There are many ways service-learning can promote creativity and give students
an opportunity to explore art! Here are just a few ideas.
Murals
Murals have become a very popular form of art. Students
can work with local artists, community groups and the local government
in order to create a mural in their community.
Photography
Students can explore the art of photography as they photograph
events at the local senior citizen center. If the senior citizen center is
having a dance or a picnic, students could be on hand to photograph the seniors
with their family members and friends. Once the photos are developed, the
students could make hand-crafted frames and give the framed photographs to
the seniors they have become friends with through the project.
Theater Arts
If the local senior citizen center or community center has a theater
arts program, students can volunteer to help with the set design!
Book Covers
Middle School or High School Art students can design book
covers for the elementary students' text books! The book covers can have
a pertinent theme, such as school safety or healthy eating habits.
Help preschoolers
Middle School or High School students can visit local Head Start centers
and help the preschoolers with art activities such as finger
painting, coloring, etc.
Nursing home or hospital
A local nursing home or VA hospital often is in need of assistance when it
comes to implementing craft and art activities with patients!
Children's hospitals could also use a hand with art classes
and activities!
Greeting cards
Hand-crafted greeting cards would be great during the holidays
for Meals-on-Wheels to pass out to their shut-ins! They can also be distributed
at local nursing homes, homeless shelters, etc.
