Description:
The New Castle High School Service Learning Center is entering its third year as a Learn and Serve grantee. During the school year of 2004-2005, the Center compiled 10,200 hours of service-learning activities while working with 13,413 people throughout the western Pennsylvania community. Students developed 75 partnerships this year as well as raised $2,233 for local agencies.

Students research community needs and then find solutions to those needs. This year, 18 juniors and seniors worked together to become civic-minded, socially responsible students as they created projects for youth, the environment, animal welfare, human services, and international. This was the first year for a service-learning class to be put into the curriculum. Because of its success, 35 students expressed interest for the 05-06 school year.

Among the projects the students lead were Applebee Pond Puppets, a puppet show that teaches smoking prevention to the elementary students, Success for All Reading, a reading mentorship program, the Penny War where students raised money for local food banks, and the Senior Prom at a local nursing home.

Students also changed the name of the Center to TOWERS (Together Only, We Experience Real Service)

We are excited for what the new year has to offer!
