One of the key elements of SCANS is the recognition and explanation of the basic skills needed to succeed in any job. These are called FOUNDATION SKILLS and the achievement of the skills is necessary for any individual seeking employment. The SCANS skills are often developed in students through participation in service-learning. Knowing to look for and advance SCANS skills during service can help students achieve and recognize the pre-employment skills they have developed.
