A.   Looking Back and Moving Forward

Spring and summer were filled with training and networking opportunities. In April, the statewide meeting in Harrisburg was a great way to connect with regional programs. The federal 21st CCLC Summer Institute in Chicago had inspiring workshops and gave a chance to network on a national level. The spring monitoring visits allowed PSLA to learn more about the Cohort 1 and 2 programs and helped us develop more focused trainings on issues such as advisory boards and evaluation.

As the school year begins and your afterschool programs start up again, there are even more opportunities! National conferences, state-wide conference calls, a new round of grantees to collaborate with and share resources.

The Pennsylvania Service-Learning Alliance (PSLA) is here to help your 21st Century Community Learning Center achieve its goals of providing children with a safe space, supervision, academic support, and enrichment activities after the school day ends. We provide support and technical assistance in a variety of ways. Everything from semi-monthly conference calls to on-site workshops to networking meetings to our digital divide program.

B.   Program Spotlight – Christopher Columbus Charter School

(from South Philly Review, July 21, 2005)
http://southphillyreview.com/view_article.php?id=3543

A seriously good time - While most summer camps are focused on enriching a child's social life, the Foundations Inc. program centers on improving the community through service-learning. One group of children is finding that working to make an impact during their summer break isn't too bad.

The youths are enrolled in the Foundations Inc. summer enrichment program at Christopher Columbus Charter School, 1242 S. 13th St. Although the program holds field trips, arts-and-crafts sessions and sports like most camps, its priority is bettering the community through service-learning.

D Integrating Service-Learning – September 11th Project Idea

Lessons of September 11: Make them a part of your curriculum for more than just one day!

Since President Bush has asked that September be known as a month of service, the White House will be producing a CD-rom that will help teachers promote volunteerism during the month of September. In Pennsylvania, teachers and students can honor the memory of those who died last year on September 11th and promote community service via service-learning.

With service-learning, lessons in citizenship, tolerance, civic virtue and character can continue long after the September 11th rememberance activities and the "month of service" are behind us. Service-learning can keep the spirit of service to others alive in the classroom and community throughout the school year.
