Description: Find out how to build a garden at your after school site or within the community.  See how students can learn a wide range of academic skills though their participation in the garden project. (What to order, where to get seeds, options if there is not enough space for garden ie. containers)

Preparing and eating healthy snacks can be a fun and academically enriching activity for after-school programs. Gather some ideas on how to prepare snacks with students and how to integrate nutrition into your program.

Presenters:
Jade Walker: Jade is a grade school coordinator with the Urban Nutrition Initiative, a University-based program that works to improve the health and nutrition of K-12 students in West Philadelphia public schools. Jade helped to create a school vegetable and herb garden at Shaw middle school, and conducts in-class and extra-curricular nutriton and gardening programming with students at the school.

Nick Cooney:  Nick coordinates the Urban Nutrition Initiative mobile food co-op program, in which a team of high school students are creating a travelling, truck-based food store that will provide organic produce and groceries to West Philadelphia communities that usually don't have access to such foods. Nick also helps conduct class-based healthy cooking lessons at University City High School.
