America Learns Tutoring Support
Tuesday, March 28th 2pm
Gary Kosman
Founder & CEO
America Learns
http://americalearns.net

The National Literacy Volunteer Performance Measurement and Support Network helps national service and nonprofit reading tutoring programs accelerate and streamline their reporting work while automating their tutor/mentor support efforts.

Tutoring programs create surveys for their tutors to complete weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly. When a tutor submits a survey, the Network instantly analyzes the tutor’s most pressing goal or challenge and immediately recommends targeted, step-by-step strategies. Staff views and acts on the survey data at any time, over any time period, across any number of variables. Staff is able to copy and paste the data into reports and grant applications -- all without doing a single piece of paper work or data entry -- reducing time spent collecting, compiling, and formatting data.

NOTE: After the Powerpoint presentation, we will be walking through the actual Website during the call. This requires an internet connection while you are on the call. Please make sure this is available. Here's the Web address we'll begin with: http://americalearns.net/paservicelearning. It will become active just before our call.

Staff Retention in Afterschool
Tuesday, March 7th 2pm
Jennifer Buher
Senior Research Coordinator
Out-of-School-Time Resource Center
http://www.sp2.upenn.edu/ostrc/

Every year, afterschool programs lose two out of every five of their staff to turnover, creating a constant pressure to recruit, hire, and train new workers. Turnover also presents a barrier to quality, making it that much more difficult for programs to ensure stable, top-notch care and enrichment for the young people they serve.

Keeping the afterschool workforce strong – and programs fully staffed – clearly can mean a great deal for a community’s overall health and economy.

SAFARIS EarthBoxes Afterschool Program
Tuesday, January 24th 2pm
Molly Philbin
The Earthbox

The SAFARIS program conducts service-learning projects that utilize EarthBoxes. EarthBoxes also has a standards-based curriculum that can be used in daytime classes and after school projects.  The standards addressed are in Science, Math and Language Arts and Consumer Science with an emphasis on nutrition.

Youth can combine entrepreneurial experiences with service-learning much as Rotarians etc. do.  It is a good model for real life.

The EarthBox is a scientifically engineered container garden used in many educational applications to teach cross curriculum standards and workforce readiness skills in national and international classroom science centers, science labs and green houses, as well as in extended learning opportunities that include Service Learning Projects. The EarthBox, developed by a Florida farmer and scientists at the University of Florida, produces the maximum amount of healthy, vegetables, herbs, flowers and plants in a very efficient, easily managed, gradient system that uses far less water and fertilizer than traditional methods of growing.  Teachers love to use the EarthBox to teach their students about capillary action, cohesion, adhesion, defusion and many other scientific principles because students of all learning styles and interests like the hands-on, experiential methods utilized with EarthBox instruction.  Furthermore, it is conveniently sized to fit in most settings.  The EarthBox is 2 ½ feet long, 15 inches wide and 12 inches high.
