Service-Learning

Service-Learning is an experiential methodology combining community service with classroom studies. Community service opportunities are integrated into the curriculum to advance academic goals and objectives.

The Corporation for National Service provides each state with funding for public schools to develop service-learning programs. Through a competitive grant process schools are awarded funds for service-learning. Grants are available for K-12 programs and Higher Ed.

Service-learning is an opportunity for teachers and students to solve real life problems and meet authentic community needs.

Through hands-on projects

  • Students gain self-esteem.
  • Communities are strengthened.
  • Academic learning is extended into the community.
  • The community is a classroom.
  • Students want to learn.

Studies demonstrate

  • Service-learning promotes responsibility.
  • Students are more enthusiastic to learn.
  • Students become active members of their schools and communities.
  • Students have a purpose and make a difference.
  • Service-learning makes our communities and schools better environments where all students can succeed.

Allow students the opportunity to

  • Build housing for the homeless.
  • Prepare food for the hungry.
  • Teach a child to read.
  • Encourage alternatives to drugs and violence.
